Centering community. Amplifying culture. Building a legacy rooted in art, resistance, and power.
About
Ivan Vega is an artist, producer, and community builder dedicated to creating sustainable opportunities for Latiné and BIPOC artists. As co-founder and Executive Director of UrbanTheater Company (UTC), he has spent over 20 years transforming a grassroots collective into one of Chicago’s most vital cultural institutions, rooted in the heart of Humboldt Park / Barrio Borikén.
The story begins in 2003, when Vega, then a 25-year-old actor working steadily on Chicago stages, recognized the urgent absence of authentic Puerto Rican and Latiné representation in the city’s theatrical landscape. He gathered a group of like-minded artists and founded Teatro Urbano, a collective born out of necessity and love for community. By 2005, that collective became UrbanTheater Company. The values that shaped him came earlier still: growing up in an apartment behind his family’s grocery store in Little Village, on the corner of 31st and Komensky, in a community where family was everything and everyone looked out for one another. Those roots are present in everything UTC does.
Before dedicating himself full time to UTC, Vega spent 11 years at the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, deepening his ties to Humboldt Park and building the community relationships that would become the foundation of UTC’s civic identity. That chapter ended in 2024, when a multi-year grant from the National Latinx Theater Initiative made it possible for him to become UTC’s first full-time employee, marking a pivotal milestone in the organization’s evolution.
Under his leadership, UTC has grown from an all-volunteer passion project to a staff of three full-time and six part-time contracted employees, with an operating budget of nearly $500K and total organizational assets exceeding $1M. In 2025, he produced UTC’s inaugural 20th Anniversary Gala, raising over $80K and forging new sponsorship relationships that will sustain the organization for years to come.
A working actor with over 20 years on Chicago stages, in film, and in television, Vega brings the perspective of a practicing artist to every decision he makes as a leader. He portrayed José “Cha Cha” Jiménez in the sold-out world premiere of Chicago Lore(s), bringing the story of the Young Lords to life on the very streets where that history was made.
His mission is simple: center community, amplify culture, and build a legacy rooted in art, resistance, and power.

UrbanTheater Company
“Purchasing this property is an act of resistance. It’s an act of fighting gentrification in our community. We want to be a space for immigrants — for everyone — to feel safe, to be inclusive, to come together.”
Founded in 2005, UrbanTheater Company has been rooted in Humboldt Park / Barrio Borikén for its entire 20-year history. UTC centers the stories of the Puerto Rican diaspora and BIPOC communities through professional theater, artist development, and deep community engagement.
In 2025, UTC acquired property at 2452 W. Division St. on Paseo Boricua to build a permanent 99-seat theater, rehearsal space, dance studio, and educational center. UTC is positioning to launch a $5M capital campaign to complete the build-out, creating a permanent home for artists, youth, and seniors in Barrio Borikén.
UTC is proud to host and mentor resident companies Tus Tías Productions and La Vuelta Theater Lab, continuing a legacy of investing in the next generation of BIPOC theater makers in Chicago.
